Without meaning to offend any English teacher or poetry enthusiast I never particularly enjoyed poetry when studying it at school. Recently, however, I’ve discovered a type of poetry that I absolutely adore: Modern Poetry. 

Modern poetry is very different to the poetry we’ve analyzed in school and in many ways it’s a lot more accessible as well as relatable. So here are some books that I would definitely recommend. 

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

You’ve probably heard about this one by now but it truly is a good one so I had to include it.

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur

This collection of poems is also one I’d recommend by the same poet. It has 5 parts following one journey: wilting, falling, rooting, rising and blooming. It has been described a celebration of love in all its forms. 

The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Amanda Lovelace

There are four parts within this collection: the princess, the damsel, the queen and you. It includes poems of all types of genres such as loss, healing, inspirations, empowerment, love and grief. The underlying idea of it is taking charge of your own life and not simply letting your life live itself.

Chasers of the Light: Poems from the Typewriter Series by Tyler Knott Gregson

This poet became known through his typewriter series on instagram so I would definitely recommend having a look at that to see what type of poems he’s written. In general the poems illuminate grand gestures and small glimpses, a really nice concept in itself. As the title suggests the poems celebrate the beauty of a life spent chasing the light. 

Love Her Wild by Atticus  

Similarly to the Typewriter Series Atticus poetry became known through his instagram full of poetry. Similarly to Chasers of the Light, Atticus captures the raw and relatable throughout the smallest and grandest moments of life. 

 

If you’ve never read any modern poetry I would definitely recommend picking one of these books out and giving it a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised.
