As you may know, grades 9/10 have MYP CAS groups, where we can all join a group either led by a teacher or a student, in the spirit of helping others. I personally think that CAS is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the world around them, and to learn more about themselves. They get to explore how other cultures live their everyday life, and they get to discover experiences that can alter the way they are for the better.

Last year, I was in the CAS group called Band-Aid. This is a group where a bunch of musicians with their own bands would come together for band practice. So last year I was in a band called the “Broken Tiles”. Personally, I think for our age we did a good job in covering songs. The group was being run by Mr W at the time.

However, this year, there was just one hiccup. Mr W was running the musical group instead. Immediately after hearing the news, I went to my former band mate Simon, and told him that we need to do something about it. And so we decided to run it ourselves. We sent an e-mail to Mr H, and waited for our response.

We got a positive response, and we were given the greenlight to go through with it. Now, what is the service aspect of this group, you may ask. Well, music is in most people’s day to day life, whether consciously making an effort to listen to some, or you hear it while shopping at the local supermarket. So us musicians all share a passion for this said music. But we want to help people with the music we produce. So we decided that in Band-Aid, we would perform at any fundraising event that would need musicians. We already have plans to collaborate with Cedar, we are currently contemplating working with Noemie’s Hope, and many more to come.

So if you wanna have a listen, come on down to the music room, and we’ll gladly let you listen in. Currently, our group consists of 3 bands, however we encourage other musicians in the school to participate in fundraising events with us. Hopefully you’ll come see one of us play sometime!
