Next on your watch list: “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is Netflix original series that premiered  on the 23rd of October of 2016, based on the novel under the same name. The show follows Todd Brotzmann, a young man who, after losing his job, finds himself in a rock bottom-like state. That is until he meets Dirk Gently, a detective aiming to solve the murder of a famous businessman. The two become unlikely allies in order to solve this mystery. Here are ten reasons why you should add this to your list:

  1. It features familiar faces.

Playing Todd Brotzmann is Elijah Wood, who you most likely recognized from the Lord Of The Rings movies, where he played Frodo Baggins. As boisterous Dirk Gently is Samuel Barnett, who appeared in the movie Jupiter Ascending and who played Renfield in the horror show Penny Dreadful. We also have Julian McMahon, actor who some of you may recognize from the show Nip/Tuck or the first Fantastic Four film. Other actors include Hannah Marks, Fiona Dourif, Jade Eshete, Mpho Koaho, among others.

  1. The acting is great.

While the show has a lot of sci-fi/fantasy bits, there is a lot of realism happening, regarding problems of the real world such as unemployment, mental illness and murder. These issues lead the characters through some rocky situations, during which the cast’s acting surpasses what you’d call ‘great’.

  1. The characters’ personalities.

Besides the two main characters previously mentioned, we are introduced to a plethora of characters, including Todd’s twin sisters, two policemen hoping to solve the same crime as Gently and a gang of hell-reckers known as “The Rowdy Three”. With this amount of people, no two are ever the same. The contrast between their behaviour is interesting and fun to watch, and it even lead you to feel a connection to either one of them.

  1. Diversity and good representation.

An assassin with a heart of gold, a badass one-woman militia who, a rocker with a strange disease who becomes part of a band of hellraisers – in the show, the female leads  have just as interesting stories as the guys, even more so. Their roles are vital for the plot to flow, and truly, the end up being among the best characters. There is also a lot of diversity, with african american, latinx and asian actors being a part of the cast.

  1. Its gripping plot.

Although a bit odd at times, the show never ceases to bring up funky, unexpected parts. Truly, the story may bee too hard to follow at times given its peculiarity, but it’s exactly that which makes it so entertaining to watch. There are elements of time travel (as well as other paranormal events) in the plot. Plus, it’s got a handful of good jokes. Truly, it’s a well-done show, unlike any other Netflix show in the catalog. 1. Its author.

The series is based on a book under the same name, which was written by Douglas Adams. Adams is the same mind behind A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which also became a movie starring Martin Freeman in 2005. You can expect a similar vibe in the show – if you liked A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, you’ll probably enjoy this show as well.

  1. Its fantastic elements.

Seeing as the show is not based on any true events and there isn’t that much realism within its main issue, you can expect it not to be too heavy. While indeed, it may have a lot of details relevant to understand the situations, those who love complex, intriguing narratives will be delighted.

  1. It’s not that long.

There is one season so far, with eight episodes each lasting approximately 40-45 minutes.

  1. It’s got a great soundtrack.

It’s no news that a lot of the recent tv shows are followed by amazing music, and this show is no exception. It features upbeat songs by lesser known bands, sticky enough to end up in your iTunes library. If you’d like to take a look to the song list and listen to them, you can find them HERE.
