Opinions on Grade 9 Privileges

Before the October break, we ended Friday with a school council assembly. Throughout the assembly different students came up to represent their grade level to suggest that we as homerooms should get more involved with student council. Each grade level representative spoke about changes that would benefit the grade and that if we wanted to enforce, we should become a homeroom representative in order to get our ideas across. Significantly, one of the main ideas that stood out between all grades was the idea of grade 9 privileges. We heard from two very determined 9th graders part of the student council who suggested the idea of grade 9 privileges as something that they deserve and need in order to function. Some of their ideas included be able to sit on the chairs by the gym, and having access to the coffee machines.

To no surprise students in ninth grade seemed enthusiastic about this idea, but it would be wrong to assume that they all had the same feelings. However, how did the other grades feel when this was announced? Here are some of the opinions from other students in different grade levels who shared their thoughts:

Hannah – 9th Grade:

“I personally don’t think that the Grade 9’s should have “privileges.” A few reasons why is because I don’t think we really need them in Grade 9 because they aren’t that important and we are new to the high school which means that we have to earn them like the Grade 11s and 12s do/did. In my opinion I don’t see why it is such a big deal that we can’t wait 2 years like Grade 11 and 12. I also think it is selfish of us to think that we are different, better and we should get special treatment then the other grades.”

Bee  – 10th Grade:

“I personally don’t think grade 9s should be allowed privileges yet because they don’t necessarily have a need for them. Grades 11 and 12 both have a need for them because they have frees. It also wouldn’t be fair to simply hand privileges over to grade 9s when all the other grades had to wait for theirs.”

Anonymous Student – 11th Grade:

“Lack of experience, lack of responsibility, and simply not knowing the area well are all more than enough for the school to not want to give ninth graders privileges. Why should they let 14 and 15 year olds roam the malignant streets of Hünenberg? What would the parents say?”

Kaya – 12th Grade:

“Other than perhaps getting Thai there’s really no need for 9th graders to have privileges. In my opinion better discussion would be whether grade 11s should get privileges at the start of the school year, they need it more than 9th graders.”

Overall it can be said that there are some strong and mixed opinions on the topic, but mainly the idea amongst most students is that the enforcement of ninth grade privileges seems like the worst thing that the school could offer. But why is that? The main problem with grade 9 privileges is that they remove the idea that 12th graders are at the top of the school because they have worked to get where they are. Giving 12th graders privileges shows other grades how you have to work and build yourself up before having the opportunity to be free around school. Coming into 9th grade, it takes a while for other grades to adjust to the new arrivals, and therefore giving them privileges won’t help them to understand where they stand in the school.

What are your thoughts on grade 9 privileges? Should the school consider them?
