What is THIMUN?

This year, 11 ISZL students and two ISZL teachers went to The Hague International Model United Nations event. It was a five day event which took place from the 28th of January until the 1st of February. Model United Nations is an educational simulation through which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations, whilst basing their conversations around the pressing issues of the modern world. I was granted the fortuity of being part of GA3 (general assembly 3) this year, where we focused on four major central issues regarding matters such as agricultural productivity and the Rohingya crisis. GA3 focuses on social, cultural and humanitarian issues and is also the biggest assembly within THIMUN. In THIMUN, all of us had to utilise parliamentary language and MUN uses specific phrases such as, ´Point of Order´ and ´Point of Information´. Within the different committees, ISZL students represented Sierra Leone, which means that we spoke from an opinion which would reflect the stance of Sierra Leone on different subjects. We also voted on several different resolutions, which were put together by ourselves or fellow delegates, within our committees.

The event entertained several engaging and fruitful discussions which allowed all students to look at matters from different perspectives and ensured that students keep an open mind. During the week, Mr K. and Ms W. also took the students to the historic and beautiful city of Delpht, where students got the chance to further indulge in the culture of the country itself. By the end of the week, students described this experience as a wonderful time where they met several great people from all over the world, with differing world views.
