This summer I had the pleasure of being part of one of Varsity Education’s summer camps in Cambridge. Varsity Education runs university preparation programs in Oxford and Cambridge for 15 to 18-year-olds. Their summer courses give you the opportunity to choose two subjects from a range of 14 subjects taught by Oxbridge academics. These subjects are taught for an hour each every morning at an undergraduate level, providing you with the experience of what it’s like to be taught at university. Their summer course aims to “prepare students from all backgrounds for applications to the world’s top universities”

Whilst providing you with these amazing opportunities, Varsity Education gives you the chance to explore your preferences. I spend 2 weeks in Cambridge, Clare College, studying Biological Sciences and Maths & Engineering. Whilst studying these two subjects during the 2 weeks, I came to the realization that Maths & Engineering was not the subject for me. This program gave me the change to discover my strengths and weakness, and my preferences. Furthermore, the Oxbridge academics teaching the courses were very helpful and understanding because they have gone through this process recently. They are able to give advice and they are very encouraging as well.

In the afternoon, the summer program offers workshops, which are designed to help you prepare for university applications. The Oxbridge academics provide you with some very helpful advice about writing your personal statement or how to prepare for interviews. Furthermore, these workshops help you build your academic profile and develop key university skills.

Besides the academics, the program plans out two days, during which you visit either Oxford or Cambridge, and Warwick. In general, the course provides sufficient time to catch up on work and visit the town. Lunch goes from 13:00 to 14:00, during which you can go to town to buy yourself lunch. Dinner is provided by the organization and ends at around 19:30 after which, an evening activity is planned or you are given free time. The Varsity Education staff is extremely friendly, understanding and flexible. The course offers a perfect amount of freedom, balancing study and free time perfectly, giving you a sneak peek into life at the university.

I definitely recommend this summer course with Varsity Education to anyone interested in exploring university life and preparing themselves for it, as well as to anyone who is still figuring out where their strengths and preferences lie. Varsity Education offers an amazing experience, providing interesting classes and the helpful seminars in perfect balance with free time, making the 2 weeks of the program unforgettable.
